The sample behind the rate

How to read measured-match denominators, valid zeros, missing values and observed goal, corner and card frequencies.

Start with the denominator

An observed rate is the number of qualifying matches divided by the number of matches with the inputs needed to evaluate that condition. Multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage.

For a full-time goal condition, use valid finished scores. For total corners, both sides need valid full-match corner counts. For total cards in the threshold explorer, all four yellow/red counts are required; the total is the sum of both sides' recorded yellow and red cards.

A recorded zero is a measurement. A blank value is missing. Treating missing corners as zero would lower the average and increase low-total frequencies without evidence.

Try the calculation

Try an illustrative sample. These numbers are a teaching example you can change, not stored match data.

6 ÷ 8 × 100 = 75.0%. 2 of 10 finished matches lack this measurement and are excluded from the denominator.

Read combined conditions as joint observations

In Threshold explorer, “both teams scored + home win” counts matches satisfying both conditions, divided by the complete selected score sample. It is not the home-win rate only among matches where both teams scored.

Goal lines use strict comparisons: over 2.5 means a total greater than 2.5, so at least three goals. An observed combination is counted directly from scores. It is not obtained by multiplying two separate percentages.

Compare like with like

Check the competition, season, venue split, match window and measured sample before comparing two values. An unbeaten record in a short window describes that window; it does not establish the same rate over a season.

Statistical leaderboards use their selected minimum sample and scope. A small sample can still produce 100%; that describes the observations and does not establish certainty. Stats Studio prints each metric's measured matches separately from the club's games played.

Next: choose the right window. For a short term definition, use the glossary.

Practise on stored data

  • Stats Studio: Compare selected club metrics with the measured matches shown for each.
  • Form guide: Club results over stored last-5, last-10 or last-20 windows.
  • Leagues: Tables, fixtures, results and statistics for each stored competition.
